"Real artists make _____" showcases local talent

Have you ever wondered what those two random buildings by the six-pack, Flagg and Nobel Hall, are used for? My friends and I know all too well. For painting, sculpture, and new media majors, this part of campus is a second home. This is where we work, making all types of art.
As you may or may not have noticed, there is an exhibition of painting and sculpture work in the Link Gallery, a space that connects the Krannert Art Museum to the Art and Design Building. The show is titled “Real Artists Make _____.” Why such a vague, nondescript title? When my peers and I sat down to try to summarize our work in one comprehensive, catchy title we just couldn’t. The truth is, our work is incredibly diverse. As one of our instructors, assistant professor Joel Ross says, “we have some people doing very traditional work all the way to some really conceptual stuff that I think some people would argue isn’t art.”
The question as to what is or isn’t art is something that artists and art lovers have been grappling with for centuries. As Morris Weitz wrote in his groundbreaking piece, The Role of Theory in Aesthetics, “’Art,’ itself, is an open concept…the very expansive, adventurous character of art…makes it logically impossible to ensure any set of defining properties.” As far as this show is concerned, we want people to form their own ideas about art and the artist. We want you to fill in the blank.
On Thursday, February 5th at 5pm we are closing the exhibition in the Link Gallery as well as holding open studios in Flagg Hall. Anyone is invited to come view the show, see our studios, ask us questions, and give us a piece of their mind. We want to share our work with others and help people understand what it is that we do in our little corner of campus. Jesse Nobbe, senior in painting, explains, “Hopefully people will have a good time. That’s the point isn’t it? That’s my goal as an artist, to get people to think, to talk, and to have a good time.”

I'm actually a lot more familiar with what goes on in Krannert than in Flagg and Nobel Hall. Are those residences?
Also what's the deal with the pile of sand? I almost stepped in that the other day. There ought to be some kind of arrow at eye level pointing down at it.
