Parkland College’s Graphic Design Student Juried Exhibition opened this month at the Parkland Art Gallery on May 17 to display this year’s best work from Parkland students in the graphic design program. The exhibit will last until June 17, and the opening reception was on Thursday, May 20, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Gallery Lounge.

In addition to graphic design, students studying web design and motion graphics will showcase their work to the community, as well as to industry professionals in the fields of marketing, advertising, communications and design. Parkland’s curriculum emphasizes “service learning,” bringing the element of working with and for actual clients into the education process.

At the reception on May 20, the achievements of the graphic design students were recognized, and some even received monetary awards. As students resolve visual communication problems for companies, many clients have reached out and contributed funds for these awards, allowing the students’ hard work to be rewarded.

The exhibit boasts a wide variety of media that reflects the shift in the design market from primarily print to new, creative forms of media. The field now ranges from web animation to motion graphics to interactive design, and students are using these new ways to assist clients with their visual communications issues.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Parkland’s Art Gallery summer hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Monday through Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. For the best in Parkland’s graphic design, the Graphic Design Student Juried Exhibition is the place to be this summer.
