One Fine Day

U of I Student-Run Internet Television Series

Nov. 07, 2007 - by Katie Devine – Buzz writer

The internet has provided us with many things - one of them being the glorious YouTube. Where else can you spend countless hours watching random videos of people you’ve never met? When you decide to watch something new though (a.k.a something with more substance), look for the new television show written, directed, and produced by actual University of Illinois students. The show is called “One Fine Day” and it is the creative genius of seniors Derek Klein (Media Studies) and Marc Morin (General Engineering).

The plot revolves around four Resident Advisors that live in the same dormitory. Throughout the six episode series, we get an insight into the trials and tribulations that these characters have to deal with on a daily basis. Robert Dignan plays Daniel Knolls, an R.A. new to the fictional Chicago Street Residence, who is learning for the first time how hard it really is to be an R.A. Elisha Reichert was cast in the role of Christi; an old friend of Daniel’s who is also a veteran R.A. in the dorm. Although she is the only girl R.A., her character is currently questioning her sexuality. Kevin Zaideman plays Steven Thompson, the “ladies man” R.A. whose actions are sometimes questionable. Portraying the polar opposite of Zaideman’s character is Dan Papas in the role of Mitch Michaels. Even though Mitch tries hard, he has no luck with the “ladies”.

The idea for the show was sort of a fluke, “We’d always talked about it,” says Morin. However, it wasn’t until Klein emailed Morin a script earlier this year that the two decided to get serious about producing it. Soon after that, they began preparing and spent the entire summer writing and pre-producing scripts for filming in the fall.

Each episode took about a week to film and another week to edit. The show has been shot in locations all around campus, although it is not meant to be a representation of the University of Illinois. Some plotlines in the show, like Steven’s womanizing (given his R.A. status), could be considered controversial. However, instead of the usual stories about freshman, the Greek system, and the recreational use of drugs and alcohol, Klein says, “The themes we show in the next couple episodes are not always touched on in professional media, or any media.” Both Klein and Morin have received mostly positive feedback on their realistic portrayals of college life. R.A.s from different colleges across the U.S. and even people from countries like France have contacted the duo to offer their praises.

Klein and Morin have decided to end the show after episode 6, but are open to suggestions. Right now people can look forward to exciting plot twists, “Don’t always assume things until you know the full story,” says Morin. The show is released on a bi-weekly basis every other Thursday. It can be watched on YouTube, Dailymotion.com, and their website: http://onefinedaytv.blogspot.com. Next semester, check it out on Channel 2 in the dorms!
