With horror movies, a reviewer can’t go in with the same expectations one may have with a potential Academy Award nominee. R-rated horror movies generally are out to accomplish three goals: to scare, to disgust, and to show nudity. So when I went into My Bloody Valentine, I wasn’t expecting a best picture winner. But regardless of my expectations, My Bloody Valentine is a cliché filled horror movie that’s only saving grace is it’s inventive use of 3-D effects.

A remake of a 1981 film of the same name, the plot follows Tom Hanniger who is returning to his hometown on the tenth anniversary of a mass murder spree that left 22 people dead at the hands of an insane miner. Tom has returned to sell the mine in which the attacks happened since he feels responsible for making the miner go on the killing spree after Tom caused an accident in the mines that killed five men. But after ten years, a masked killer wielding a pickaxe has shown up and Tom must find out who the killer is to put his personal demons behind him and keep himself from being arrested for the crimes he is the main suspect for.

The filmmakers of My Bloody Valentine deserve credit for a few aspects of the film that are inventive. First and foremost, the 3-D is used very effectively, with everything from bullets to eyeballs being thrown off the screen. Secondly, the film does have some fun, creative, kills, but how many different ways can a pickaxe go through someone’s head?

For a film that feels very self aware of what type of movie it is, it doesn’t try very hard to break the mold of a stereotypical modern horror movie. Many of the scares that are supposed to make the audience jump can be seen coming two minutes before they happen, making the movie not terrifying in the slightest.

My Bloody Valentine is a cliché ridden movie that suffers from a lack of scares and an ending that lies to the audience so that there was no rational way to predict who the killer is. But the main reason to see the film is the 3-D, which won’t disappoint you. The 3-D provides for an interesting theater experience, and was my favorite part of the movie, which is sad since the film can’t stand on it’s own merits and needs a gimmick to provide entertainment.

The lame thing is that I know people who've gone to theaters expecting the 3D since all the trailers mention that, and then many places don't even run the 3D version.
