Opening Friday:
Atonement
Pride & Prejudice director Joe Wright reunites with Keira Knightly to take on Ian McEwan’s haunting tale of young love torn apart by war and false accusations. The initial fall release buzz is solid and if P&P was any indicator of Wright’s potential, Atonement should be a knockout.
The Golden Compass
What do you get when you combine Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman, CGI and a plot suspiciously reminisce of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? I’m not sure, but it doesn’t look good. So far, no one important likes it either, so you might want to pass on this one ...
The Amateurs
A middle aged man convinces his other middle aged neighbors to make a porn. Wait a minute ... wasn’t this movie called Calendar Girls?
Been There, Done That:
Hitman
How many videos games turned into movies have to be made for America to realize they all suck? With maybe the original Resident Evil being the only exception, there’s absolutely nothing they have to offer society in any capacity.
Enchanted
Surprisingly enough, Enchanted has had a lot of good buzz behind it. It seems to be a good family flick rather than just another run of the mill children’s Disney story. Probably a good date movie.
August Rush
A musically gifted young orphan boy (Freddie Highmore), who is the by-product of the one night stand of two musicians, goes on a journey to find his parents. It sounds like a heartwarming cliché to me, but it’s allegedly not half bad. I’d recommend seeing Enchanted first.

I disagree with the notion that movies based on video games have nothing to offer.
Many of them are so horribly awful that you can't help but laugh at them while simultaneously considering how best to put an end to your own existance (Super Mario Brothers, anyone?). Only slightly worse than movies based on video games are the movies that are centered around people who play video games (The Wizard and Stay Alive come to mind in this regard). They're a guilty pleasure for a lot of us.
