Lost has been delivering some serious plot twists this season. With half of the castaways left on the island, we’ve been given glimpses of the island’s past and future, but none of them really make much sense. Here’s what we do know:
The Oceanic Six are back on the island, minus Aaron. The last we heard of him, an angry Kate didn’t want to talk about what happened to him. Ben is also back on the island, as is Lapidus the helicopter pilot. Locke came back to life after the plane crashed, which might also be a clue as to what’s going on with Jack’s dad. Ben was the one who killed Locke by strangling him after he revealed the plan to get everyone back on the island.
The rest of the folks on the island ended up in the ‘70s with the Dharma Initiative. Sawyer has become quite a leader, talking the still ageless Richard Alpert out of attacking the Dharma people and earning himself and the rest of the castaways positions in the Dharma society. He and Juliet (aka “Suliet”) are shacking up, and they make a lovely couple. Juliet successfully delivers a healthy baby boy who was conceived on the island, and all seems well. That is, of course, the perfect time for Jin to call Sawyer and let him know that he’s found Jack, Kate and Hurley wandering around in the jungle.
The show’s creators are going to draw the big questions out until the end, and there are a lot of big questions. Why does Richard never age? Why does he wear so much eyeliner? Why are they stuck in the ‘70s, and how do they get out again?
If there was a way for Jack, Kate and Hurley to get sucked into the ‘70s from their plane, then there’s a way for them to get back out. They went back in time for a reason, though, and it might be to fix something. Maybe Faraday’s wrong, and they can change the past. Maybe they’ll encounter a young Ben and sabotage him in some way. He’s not supposed to control the island. Everyone on the island is miserable with him as a leader, and the Dharma people seem pretty relaxed and groovy. Maybe they were supposed to have the power instead. Gassing a bunch of hippies seems pretty unnecessary and makes both Ben and Richard look downright evil. Something happens that makes women unable to give birth to children conceived on the island. Maybe the island is angry that the wrong people got killed, and now the problem can be fixed.
Here’s something to take note of, though: The big statue at the very beginning of “LaFleur” looks Egyptian. It’s also holding ankhs. The necklace Annie took off of her dead husband was an ankh, and it is the necklace that caused her and Horace to have a fight. It could have actually been Paul’s necklace, or he could have stolen it from one of the “Hostiles,” which might explain why they shot him while he was just trying to have a picnic with his wife. Also, Horace is the leader of the Dharma folks. Horus was an Egyptian god who protected and guided the pharaohs of Egypt. Richard Alpert’s initials are R.A, and Ra was the king of the Egyptian gods. Maybe Richard Alpert never ages, and wears so much eyeliner, because he’s an Egyptian god? Maybe the islands original inhabitants are part of some ancient Egyptian civilization, and that’s why they’re so possessive of the island. They must have some reason. Unfortunately, we probably won’t know for another year or so.
