Managing Editor's Note

May. 08, 2008 - by Evangeline Politis – Buzz Managing Editor

I have been working for buzz for about two years now and this is my last issue. I began under the wing of the past editor-in-chief, Tatyana Safronova, when she had recently taken over the post of community editor. She and I were in a reporting class our sophomore year and, as our friendship blossomed, we decided to take a magazine writing class together the next school year. In that class I discovered that magazine writing was the perfect outlet for my aspirations. I was well aware that I never wanted to cover hard news: shooting, robberies and the lot. Instead, I simply wanted to make my audience more educated about their surroundings and maybe, if I was lucky enough, a little bit happier about the world. Tatyana recruited me that fall to write stories about community members who don’t usually appear in the news. It seemed like a perfect match with my ideals and I began writing stories on everyone from a local gallery owner to a public defender.

As Tatyana moved up in the ranks, I took on her position as community editor. The best part of becoming a permanent staff member was the people I got to work with every week. Sure, I suddenly was empowered with the decision of what was important enough to appear in print, and that was cool, but it was the people that made this job worth it. I probably wouldn’t have stayed till the final week of my college career as the managing editor if it weren’t for them.

I want to thank all the people that made me look forward going to work each night. It has been an outstanding opportunity that I can only dream will someday be duplicated. I will probably never laugh as hard at another job in my life. You are the most talented group of people I have ever worked with and expect amazing things out of each one of you. Thank you for making every issue memorable.
