    Fahey Bomb

Not every cocktail in the world is meant to be some stoic example of manhood, placed up on a pedestal for all to admire. Believe it or not, some cocktails are consumed for fun; they don’t have to be as serious as people assume them to be. That’s where the Fahey Bomb at Crane Alley comes in. Not many students, in particular, may typically frequent the area, Crane Alley’s headquarters (115 W. Main St.), but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of wonderful cocktails. The Fahey Bomb is a custom creation named after Tim Fahey, who worked with the current general manager of Crane Alley when they both worked at Guido’s in Champaign. James Williams Jr., manager of Crane Alley, explains the role of this cocktail in greater detail: “It’s one of those drinks that’s best for a starter, otherwise you risk losing track of what you do that night.” He’s right, too; this is not a drink for the young of heart or the weak of stomach. More than five different types of alcohol and a few types of mixers contribute to the cornucopia of flavor that is the Fahey Bomb. However, this is not a drink you can sip on for the next hour; the inclusion of half and half adds a time limit to the drink, much like an Irish Car Bomb – that is, the drink must be consumed before the cream curdles. What’s great about this cocktail, though, is that even though you have to fly through it, the taste still stands out. Each of the fruit flavors has their own distinct time in the sun as they rush across the tongue, while the half and half keeps the drink at a slightly creamy consistency. The Red Bull’s carbonation practically ceases to exist, but the flavor remains, giving the Fahey Bomb a layered taste that evokes the feeling of eating fresh fruits. The aftertaste is just as wonderful, to boot. Watching this drink come to fruition (pun intended) is half of the experience, and Williams doesn’t let anyone down in that regard. While he is more than willing to jump up and make you one, he has a suggestion for first timers: “It’s a fantastic choice for a birthday drink.” Well, I guess it’s my birthday then, and that’s why this drink is cocktail of the week.
