Going to a Jeff Tweedy concert is like therapy, except the attendees do the listening, not the talking. Last night’s concertgoers comprised a mixed-bag, with about half college-aged, the other half middle-aged, and a small smattering in their teens. The subdued sea of plaid set the tone for Tweedy’s alt-country heavy set, with many a novelty song and even a few throwback Uncle Tupelo tunes. Compared to Tweedy’s last stop in the CU in 2006, this year’s showcased a more jovial and mentally “at ease” musician. Comparatively cheery pieces punctuated the set, from the harmonica-accompained “I’m Always in Love,” to the droll-ironic “The Wilco Song,” and his adorably wife-dedicated “I’m the Man Who Loves You.” Tweedy aptly noted how it’s “always a challenge” trying “to balance fun with crushing depression.” The Wilco frontman interacted amicably with the audience throughout; Tweedy’s wry humor proved endearing, and his openness to the frequent interruption of shouted-out requests resulted in a set far from predictable.
