Let me ask you something? Have you ever seen a movie about some reluctant hero who has the all elusive “Power within” and either skirts that power or just plain misuses it until circumstances force them to become the brave hero they were always meant to be? Well if you have, then I’ve seen that same story in slightly differing themes say, a million times. Not including TV. Well for the purposes of this review, the hero in question who fits this motif happens to be Will Smith as Hancock. A brash, drunken, screw-up with super powers who constantly tries to save the day, but always manages to cause more damage than the criminals he’s after.
Now, I know that as a harsh, firmly cynical, sophisticated, hardened critic, I’m supposed to hate yet another movie about the hero who lies within the body of an arrogant, self-centered asshole, but I must admit… I kinda fell for it this time. And do you know why I fell for it? Because I had fun. It’s that simple. Hancock had me laughing occasionally, and entertained for at least seventy-eight out of the one-hundred or so minutes this movie was on.
So I’m saying this isn’t new or revolutionary. A revolutionary movie would have been about a character who has super powers but is only somewhat morally bankrupt who is not evil nor good. A person that lies dead in the middle and using his powers whenever it’s convenient and the situation presents itself. But people don’t want to see movies which present godlike characters possessing morality in shades of grey. They want a simple movie where the good guy is always a good guy, just a little misunderstood and all it takes is the right optimistic guiding hand to lead them to their rightful heroic destiny… or some mindless crap like that. Anyway Hancock blows stuff up, throws whales hundreds of feet, rips apart buildings and has some nice jokes and sight gags. All-in-all, you don’t need me to tell you, it’s perfect popcorn munching goodness.
