Alfred Hitchock's The 39 Steps

One of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock films and one of director’s lesser-known works, this 1935 film has stood the test of time while remaining both suspenseful and entertaining. The 39 Steps follows Richard, a tourist in London, who happens to stumble across Annabelle, a woman running from spies and needing a place to hide. When Richard lets her stay at his place, he wakes up the next morning to find her murdered. Fearing that he will be accused of Annabelle’s death, Richard goes on the run and subsequently must find the people behind the spy ring.

Hitchcock enjoyed the theme of a man going through an extraordinary chain of events and used it in many of his films. The 39 Steps almost feels like a preliminary run of North By Northwest, except instead of the main character traveling around America, he travels between London and Scotland.

If you are a fan of Hitchcock then The 39 Steps is a must see. If not, it’s still a very intense thriller that will keep you guessing.
