Del Toro returns with what promises to be a stylish sequel

After watching Blade 2, again, I am thoroughly convinced that Guillermo Del Toro is a genius auteur of film. He is a connoisseur of sorts (but not of cocoa krispies). Most people who have been exposed to Del Toro’s work probably know him for his extensive directorial and screenwriting duties on the visceral and visual fairy tale nightmare that was Pan’s Labyrinth — one of the best films of 2007. Well, either that or the first Hellboy movie — a film with fantastic art and costume designs, but a poor script. Film aficionados like myself, however, know him equally as well for his work on other hidden gems like The Devil’s Backbone (2001) and the flawed, but intriguing, Cronos (1994), which, like Blade 2 and the Hellboy movies, also has Ron Perlman in it. But let’s not brag about who knew about who before what movie was released; we all already know I’m a smug and pretentious ass with a passion for cult films. This is Del Toro’s time to shine.
Fresh off the heels of Pan’s Labyrinth, Del Toro seems to have found a new use for his left over costumes as demons in the sequel to 2004’s Hellboy. Anyone who has seen the trailer for Hellboy II: The Golden Army will instantly notice Del Toro’s abstract and ethereal visual style. Having already been anchored down by the “origins of the story” plot line necessities and homages in the first film, Del Toro seems focused on recreating his demonic visions with a new purpose: a war of the worlds rather than fleeting fantasies. Here, Hellboy must stop the rebelling armies of the mystical world who are bent on overtaking Earth.
Ron Pearlman, who was wonderfully entertaining in the first installment, returns for a second go around with Selma Blair. David Hyde Pierce is out and Doug Jones (you might know him as “The Silver Surfer”) is in. Seth McFarlane apparently is in the mix somewhere, too. I highly recommend you check out the trailer for Hellboy II: The Golden Army on IMDB.com for what might be this summer’s third best comic book adaptation (behind The Dark Knight and Iron Man). The film hits theaters July 11.
