Grab your best outfit, hide your hair products, and get out your dancing shoes because tonight Champaign is gonna party like it’s 1962 — ol’school Baltimore style. The energetic, musical-comedy Hairspray is taking over Champaign tonight at the Assembly Hall Star Theater. Get ready for some rockin’ and rollin’ as Assembly Hall transforms into the new ’60s hot dance spot at 7:30 p.m.
This award-winning musical tells the tale of the big girl with an even bigger heart. When chubby Tracy Turnblad wins a spot on a local TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show, it catapults her from outsider to teen queen sensation overnight. Still, many obstacles are ahead for this once-unpopular girl, one of which includes the skinny, blond TV producer Velma Tussie who is destined to stop Tracy from skyrocketing to success. But are her big hair and trendsetting dance moves enough to outshine the reigning dance princess, win the affection of her crush Link Larkin, and overcome racist Baltimore attitudes due to her black friends?
Critics continue to rave about this production, The New York Post calls it “A great big fat gorgeous hit!” and The New York Times says it is “Irresistable!”
Hairspray is currently enjoying its fifth record-breaking year and continues to bring down the house filling theaters with joyous laughter, teen romance, and larger-than-life hairdo’s. This musical phenomenon has captured audiences all across America and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Hairspray is based on The Newline Cinema film written and directed by John Walters. It also features a book by Mark O’Donnel and Thomas Meehan. This production was originally directed by Jack O’Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell. This time around, Matt Lentz and Danny Lentz have taken on the challenge of recreating this pulsating production and bringing it to life.
Hairspray is filled with heart-pumping tunes that are sure to have your soul dancing, your feet moving and your body twistin’ out of your seat. Can Tracy Turnblad’s big heart can win over America without messing up her updo? Check out Hairspray TONIGHT to find out.
