Many people can agree that there is one weakness they will never be able to overcome: their love for greasy food. Oct. 25 is National Greasy Food Day, which is the perfect excuse to indulge in your favorite fatty meal. Not only is greasy food delicious, but it is also convenient and cheap for all college students.
Fast food first began with the development of drive-ins during the 1940s. Since then, it has become an American phenomenon. The average American consumes approximately 160 fast food meals each year. People enjoy fast food at any time, whether it is a quick lunch or a late night pleasure.
Greasy food defines the American cuisine. Hamburgers, hotdogs and French fries are just a few of the most popular foods in the United States. According to many U of I students, pizza gets first place for the best greasy food.
The real question is, why do people crave greasy food? According to scientists, it was necessary for people to eat high-calorie, fatty foods in order to save energy during times of starvation. Clearly, Americans are exposed to more than enough food today, yet their taste for fat has not declined.
Have you ever wondered why you want to stop by the nearest pizza or fast food joint on your way home from the bars? There is a scientific explanation: fatty foods “grease” the lining of the intestines and help absorb the alcohol. So, if you do not want that nasty hangover the next morning, feel free to eat that extra slice of pizza.
Even though greasy food is not necessarily healthy, it can be enjoyed in moderation. Imagine how different our culture would be without experiencing the delectable flavors of mozzarella sticks, cheeseburgers, and eggrolls. With that said, take advantage of National Greasy Food Day and satisfy your fast food cravings, guilt free.
