When Futurama returned last year with Bender’s Big Score, fans could finally rejoice that the Planet Express was back in action. The film was a great mixture of the highbrow comedy that defines the series and subtle references to past episodes of the show. The worst part about Bender’s Big Score was probably the extremely small amount of time Zapp Brannigan was actually on screen. But overall, Futurama had returned, and it was good.
Now, the show is back once again with its second straight to DVD movie, The Beast with a Billion Backs and this time around, the BEST part of the film is all of the Zapp Brannigan screen time.
The Beast with a Billion Backs picks off pretty much exactly where Bender’s Big Score left off. Thanks to Bender’s time traveling escapades there is a giant rip in the universe and everyone is wondering exactly what sort of complications that it could cause. It turns out that the anomaly is a gateway to another universe that houses a giant tentacle monster that ends up using his appendages to control the minds of everyone in our universe.
What sets Beast apart from Bender’s Big Score is that this film is simply just not as funny. While Bender’s Big Score felt like an actual amusing movie, this just feels like an extremely long episode with too much filler in it. This isn’t to say that the movie isn’t funny, it definitely has some great lines, most of which come from Mr. Brannigan himself.
Bender’s Big Score was a great return for the series, and in comparison Beast is a disappointment. It is still worth watching for any Futurama fan but most of the enjoyment will come from nostalgic feelings.
