Many think that the area south of Pennsylvania Avenue consists of just a couple of dorms and a cemetery; contrary to this notion, between Pennsylvania Avenue and Florida Avenue Residence Halls and Mount Hope Cemetery lies an animal laboratory. The Meat Science Lab, 1503 Maryland Dr., Champaign, is the home to the meat processing center where the Animal Science Department slaughters animals.

It is also rumored that the Department offers cuts of meat to the public fresh off the University Farms. This is actually true and fulfills the needs of many residents who only eat locally raised livestock. The Meat Salesroom in room 103 of the Lab offers beef, pork and lamb in a variety of cuts and specials. According to Katelyn Jones, a freshman in Animal Science who works in the Salesroom, they will be offering smoked chicken as a special for the holidays.

The meat would normally be discarded, but instead it’s sold at competitive prices. The Salesroom is open to the public on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 5:30 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information call 333-3404.
