Fans of classic 1960s Broadway musicals are in for a real treat at Chicago’s Ford/Oriental Theatre with the wonderful revival tour of "Fiddler on the Roof," featuring Topol, the Oscar nominated star of the 1971 Norman Jewison adaptation of the Tony Awardwinning Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock 1964 musical.
The remarkably fit Topol ,who’s played the part of Tevye, the Russian Jewish milkman, over 2500 times, has clearly made this a career role. Some may think, how in the world can a nearly 74 year old keep up the energy for such a demanding role? You just have to see the exuberant way he does the renditions of the classic songs “Tradition, “If I Were a Rich Man”, and “To Life."
Director/choreographer Sammy Dallas Bayes recreates the original Jerome Robbins stagings, ethic humor and dances with top Broadway flare and jubilant excitement. The story adapted from Sholom Aleichem’s stories by Joseph Stein, tells the sentimental heartwarming trials and tribulations of Tevye, his wife Golda, and their five daughters and the changes coming to the small Russian village of Anatevka in 1905 on the eve of the revolution.
In addition to the play’s spectacular star, Bayes’ female leads are incredible. Susan Cella’s Golda is passionately powerful and her vocal skills are wonderful. The women playing Tevye’s older daughters, Tzeitel, Chava and Hodel (Rena Strober, Alison Walla and Jamie Davis, respectively), are picture perfect sisters and are wonderful in their “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” number.
"Fiddler on the Roof," dubbed Topol’s farewell tour in the part of Tevye, continues until June 28 at the Ford Centre for the Performing Arts/Oriental Theatre at 24 W. Randolph St. in the heart of Chicago’s theatre distinct. Ticket information can be found at www.BroadwayinChicago.com or by contacting 312 902-1400.
