Recently I have been feeling like I’m working my last summer until actual adulthood away. Between the work to be done at buzz and my second job as a waitress I have been working six days a week and am desperate for a summertime adventure.

This week my father emailed me a story published in the Robinson, Ill., Daily News about a 69-year-old man named “Captain Ned” Mott who is having a summer adventure of his own.

On May 21, Captain Ned set out alone on a kayaking trip along the Wabash River that will take him from Huntington, Ind., to Tarpon Springs, Fla. On his adventure Captain Ned camps out, cooks noodles over the fire, drinks beer and mingles with “the natives” of the towns he encounters. This week he will kayak through Nashville, Tenn.

Captain Ned’s adventures are documented in a blog called Captain Ned Mott’s Kayak Krooz 2008, and entries are contributed by family members who communicate with him whenever he has cell phone reception and by friends he meets along the way. You can read about Captain Ned’s adventures at http://captainnedskayakkrooz.blogspot.com.

While I’m not that into kayaking, and I puked the last time I was on a boat, I wish I could ditch my worldly responsibilities and go down river for a while. Hopefully, I will be able to embark on an equally righteous adventure of my own this year. If I don’t get to it now, I probably never will. Well, maybe not until I’m 69.
