This week I am leaving the comfort of CU and taking a journey to Mecca. No, not the holy place in Saudi Arabia, but magazine journalism Mecca: New York City.

I’m going on this four-day journey with 12 other journalism students, including buzz editors Evangeline Politis, Keri Carpenter, Janice McDuffee, and Carlye Wisel. The purpose of the trip is to catch a whiff of what it’s really like to work for a “real” magazine, and if you’re going to do that New York is the place to go. We will be visiting places like Marie Claire, Esquire, TV Guide and Fast Company — you know, all the fancy magazines with glossy pages.

The place I am most excited about visiting is New York Magazine. If you’ve never visited their Web site, nymag.com, you must. It’s a wonderland of fashion show photo shoots, stories about the best restaurants in the world, politics, real estate, celebrities in the nude, anything you could ever hope for. It’s truly amazing.

Another thing I’m looking forward to is having cocktails with U of I alumni that now work in the magazine biz. I feel hopeful that they will offer me sage-like advice about how to get a job that will pay my student loan bills.

We will also be meeting up with former buzz Editor in Chief Erin Scottberg, who landed a job at Popular Mechanics post-graduation. See? There is hope, mom and dad.

Although our journey will be a short one, members of the buzz staff will be absorbing wisdom from the best in the business. We’ll let you know what we discover in the Big Apple.
