8:48 Wednesday Morning — It’s the first week of spring semester. I wake up and realize I have 12 minutes to make it to my first class, the one class I absolutely cannot be late to. I suspect my alarm never sounded, but then again I’ve gotten really good at turning it off while half-asleep. I throw my hair into a ponytail, put on a sweatshirt and head out the door.

Driving like a madwoman into the zoo they call Campustown, I find a parking space and sprint to class. I make it to class only a minute or two late, looking like a deranged, Britney-like version of myself. Later I would find a love note from the City of Urbana resting on my windshield in the form of a parking ticket.

College life, no matter how hard you try, is the most un-glamorous time in a person’s life. Life isn’t so fabulous when you’re sleep deprived, accumulating debt, and terrified you’ll never land a “real” job.

In his column this week Michael Coulter (pg. 26) puts in his two cents in about CareerBuilder.com’s “sexiest” occupations. Notice that being a student didn’t make the cut.

I try my hardest to make this student thing look good. But as I look into the mirror and observe my peers I realize that we’re never going to make school sexy when we’re a bunch of fleece-wearing degenerates who can’t make it out of bed before 10 a.m.

Luckily, there are other people working these sexy jobs in the community who can pick up the slack. CU is home to sexy firefighters, cocktail waitresses, artists, and TV anchors. This week, without being creepy, show your appreciation for these hard-working people. Maybe one day I can have a sexy job too.
