It’s hard to avoid soaring hopes for the newest Chuck Palahniuk screen adaptation. Fight Club sets an almost unreachable standard, and any attempt at meeting it must be daunting for everyone involved. It is a very pleasent surprise, then, that Choke exceeds expectations and fulfills every fantasy of what the perfect dark comedy should be.
Victor Mancini, (Sam Rockwell) is a disturbed sex addict whose mother, (Anjelica Huston) is suffering from dementia in a mental institution. Affected since childhood by his mother’s constant insanity, he takes solace in the restaurant patrons who save and comfort him when he forces himself to choke on his food. After exhausting his sexual relationships with every member of the institution’s staff, he seeks out a new young and beautiful doctor who has some equally twisted tricks up her sleeve.
A brief disclaimer before I rave unwaveringly about Choke: This movie is not for everyone. The easily offended, devout fans of romantic comedies, parents in general, and people who have read the book and want something comparable may find mild disappointment or shocking hatred. It’s basically a love it or hate it situation that is thought provoking on either side, and therefore worthwhile, regardless.
Alright, the raving shall commence. With the most thoroughly developed characters on-screen in a considerable period of time, Choke shines as an extremely thoughtful film that steers clear of sappy and predictable while still managing to leave audiences satisfied and provoked. Intricately layered and brilliantly acted, there was genuine spirit and heart in every moment. Actor Clark Gregg makes his debut as director, and does a tremendous job building every facet of an extremely complex story. This will most definitely not be his last work. Honest, smart, and incredibly sexy, Choke is an unforgettable and unapologetic film that should top your must-see list.
