Definitely for the family

Definitely, Maybe

Definitely, Maybe is a cute little romantic comedy about a 30-something dad, on the verge of a divorce, telling the story of his love life to his precocious ten-year-old daughter. This sweet film, the brainchild of writer/director Adam Brooks, who last penned Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, delivers a rather routine story with several surprisingly likeable characters, believable acting and a feel-good ending.

Ryan Reynolds plays Will Hayes, a NY City advertising man who narrates the story of his romantic life, after awkwardly being confronted by his daughter, Maya, who experiences her first sex ed lesson in school. With the same charm and cuteness of her Oscar nominated Little Miss Sunshine role, Abigail Breslin’s Maya provides the real heart of the film’s tale. Her character centers Reynold’s performance to make the telling of his rather typical single-guy romantic escapades into a somewhat uniquely appealing tale of father-daughter bonding.

The film’s casual flashback narrative reveals that the women in Hayes’ life are all remarkably attractive and the reasons for his break ups and never settling down seem mostly due to bad timing and career conflicts. Emily (Elizabeth Banks) was his college sweetheart, who wouldn’t come to NY with him when Hayes chose to work on the 1992 Clinton presidential campaign. Summer (Rachel Weisz), an old friend of Emily’s, becomes a serious fling that ends abruptly when her investigative piece for New York magazine derails the candidacy of a corrupt politico for whom Hayes works. April (Isla Fisher) is a carefree bookstore clerk and collector of Jane Eyre editions, who is looking for an inscribed copy her dad gave her on her 13th birthday, shortly before he died.

Out of these on screen relationships, Reynolds and Fisher have the greatest natural chemistry, while Breslin and Reynolds will clinch the hearts of those in search of a rather different, yet pleasant love story.
