The Green Hornet

Still riding high from my extended St. Patrick’s Day revelry, I once again chose to indulge in a cocktail that brought out some aspect of this glorious holiday season. This time, the color green was the target. That’s where Crane Alley comes back in to play. Located just outside of campus, this establishment has already fallen prey to my journalistic endeavors a couple weeks ago with their Fahey Bomb, a drink that still has me buzzing. However, the article is focused towards their other original concoction, the Green Hornet. “We originally called it the Hulk, on account of the color,” says James Williams, Jr., manager and bartender extraordinaire, “but we realized that was already another concoction.” It’s good that they don’t share a namesake (the non-Crane Alley version tastes godawful); this Green Hornet packs quite the sting. Bad puns aside, it’s a smaller drink, or as Williams would put it, “it’s a large shot.” The color is a mixture between turquoise and seafoam with a pearly sheen all around; basically, it’s green. You can sure tell what’s in it, as it both smells and tastes like rum. But there is more than meets the eye with this drink – rum is not the only flavor. The orange juice adds a citrus hint that plays well off the citrus rum, and the flavors of every ingredient mix together wonderfully, but it’s still easy to pick out what’s inside the drink. The aftertaste is much like the initial taste; that is to say, it’s a citrus party inside your mouth and you’re most likely invited. I personally loved this drink, and would most definitely order it anytime I’m feeling green. In keeping with the St. Patrick’s Day theme, and solely because it tastes so good, The Green Hornet is the cocktail of the week.
