As finals moved closer, the stress began to build. Tests and papers accumulate and some of you may even be graduating. As these pressures continue to build, why not have a release valve so you don’t blow up? Something that can let you escape to fantastical worlds of childish fun. No, not alcohol ... I mean comics! This week saw the release of several good reads.
Captain Carrot and the Final Ark #3 (DC) —
A Countdown tie-in, possibly, this series takes place in the alternate reality of Earth-26. A world where cartoon animals are king, tensions have risen between land and sea animals. And when a mysterious salamander attempts to instigate zooanthropic genocide, America calls on Captain Carrot and the incorrigible Zoo Crew! This is the last issue, so pick it up. It will be hare today and gone tomorrow!
Salvation Run #2 (DC) —
Tired of super-villains trying to take over the world, the government decided to give the villains a world of their own. Exiling various DC villains like the Joker, Lex Luthor and Clayface to another planet, America has washed its hands of these megalomaniacs. Now dozens of egocentric criminals are forced to live, or kill, together.
Simon Dark #3 (DC) —
Gotham City is a big place and you have to admit, Batman isn’t Superman — Bruce can’t be everywhere at once. Luckily one corner of the city is protected by the patchwork zombie Simon Dark. Written by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), this series redefines the Frankenstein myth and the role of zombies in a super heroes’ world.
New Avengers #37 (Marvel) —
In the wake of Civil War, where hero fought hero, the super villains were getting organized. The Hood, a low-life with a cloak of demonic origins, declared himself kingpin of super crime. Unfortunately for him, the New Avengers found out about his plan and attacked his stronghold ... and they brought backup. Guest-starring Hercules, the X-Men, Silver Surfer, Punisher, the Mighty Avengers and Howard the Duck, the last issue set up for a fantastic battle! It’s definitely clobberin’ time!
X-Men: Die By The Sword #5 (Marvel) —
Comic book crossovers are usually fun because the world of each comic collides, but in this miniseries worlds are literally bashed together. Teaming-up the reality-hopping Exiles, composed of X-Men from other realities, and Excalibur, the British X-Men led by Captain Britain, these two teams are redefined when reality is threatened. This is the last issue of the series and sets up for new Exiles and Excalibur books in 2008.
Irredeemable Ant-Man Vol. 2: Small Minded (Marvel) —
Say it ain’t so! This great series by Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead) concludes in the second, and final, volume. Sleazy Eric O’Grady joins Damage Control, “teams-up” with the Mighty Avengers, and becomes an appetizer during World War Hulk! But don’t worry, even though the series is over, Ant-Man will soon be seen in the pages of Dan Slott’s Avengers: The Initiative.
