You may have noticed the bright signs announcing Cocomero’s presence on Wright Street go up in recent weeks. However, apart from coffee and frozen yogurt that is printed on the signs, not much information has been released about the new addition to Campustown. Owner Colin Kim explains his plan for Cocmero.
Q. Most people in CU have never heard of Cocomero. What exactly is it?
A. This is our first store. As you you know, it’s frozen yogurt. It’s really, really popular in California where it started. The first store was called Red Mango and it had only two flavors but it had hundreds of customers every day. Pretty soon, there was a frozen yogurt shop in every building in California. The CEO of Starbucks is investing $40 million to open 500 new stores this year.
Q. What will Cocomero be offering?
A. We will have real frozen yogurt with live active culture. Instead of two flavors we will have 16 flavors.It is self-serve. There will be eight machines mounted on the wall and you can choose any flavor you want. At the end there will be a fresh fruit bar topping bar with mango, strawberries, pineapple and blueberries. After that there will be a dry bar with chocolate chips, sprinkles and other things. Then we add up all the yogurt and toppings and charge by weight. Usually they cost around $3-5. The inside will be painted with 11 different colors and there is a great view of campus.
Q. Why did you decide to open it?
A. Nobody has opened a frozen yogurt shop yet in Illinois, they are mostly in the warm-weather states now. My business partner graduated from here and knows this area well. This is a great place, and a frozen yogurt shop is great for college students. It is 100% natural, can help to lose weight and tastes better than ice cream. This is a really great place to start with.
Q. When will it be opening?
A. It will open April 3, 2009. We’re thinking about a promotion like free on the first day or maybe 50% off. We are still trying to decide the details.

yeah there's definitely a Red Mango in Evanston (near Northwestern University) that i've been to a lot. I love it!

i think that should say there's no "self-serve" frozen yogurt shop in illinois or the midwest or whatever- is there??? where's the closest one?
