After every viewing of this movie, I find myself moving Children of Men up the ranks on my personal favorite movie list. Alfonso Cuaron’s masterpiece is not only one of the most terrifying movies I have ever seen, but also one of the most gorgeous. So many scenes stand out in this film, but the sequence that always blows me away is after the baby is born.
As the world is falling apart around them and bullets fly over their heads, Kee and Theo make their way through the battlefield in their attempt to find a boat to get Kee and her baby to safety. The scene peaks after they are trapped in building being viciously attacked by tanks and marines. Soldiers storm the building as Kee and Theo are trying to find a way out. On their way out, the begin acquiring a following of others hidden in the building who see the baby for the first time. When the first soldier catches a glimpse of the baby he immediately calls of fire and state dumbfounded at the newborn. What follows is fantastic direction as Kee and Theo make their way out of the building, surrounded by hundreds of soldiers who were ordered to kill on sight, now in awe seeing the first baby born in eighteen years.
The whole movie is impeccably shot, filled with many amazing single shot sequences, but none match the weight of the newborn and her mother fleeing the invasion.
