On Feb. 28, Mike 'n' Molly's will host a concert to benefit the local organization CATsNAP, the Champaign Area Trap, Spay/Neuter and Adoption Program. Organized by prominent local musician David Domal, the concert features performances by Angie Heaton, Dottie and the Rail, The Number One Sons, Golden Quality and Terminus Victor.
Domal has a favorable personal connection with the CATsNAP organization which, he shared, strengthened his decision to proceed with the process of conducting a show. "I first heard of [CATsNAP] three years ago and became involved when my wife and I adopted two cats from the group. Among other things, they work with the animal shelter and humane society to find foster homes for the cats,” he explained.
Speaking with Domal, it became clear that the process behind organizing the average weekly show and a benefit show differs in a number of ways. While not to downplay either type of show, there is a different mindset to planning for a show in which the proceeds go to a person or group that is not the artists playing the show.
“Benefit shows are really fun to book. People want to come out to see it, want to talk about it and the nice part is that often times, the [venue] will cover parts of the expense so that the organization is able to walk away with money in the end,” Domal said. “Mike Murphy (owner of Mike ‘n’ Molly’s) is so helpful with that. He has always been supportive of local music, local causes and works to cover everything he can. He’s good people.”
The CATsNAP benefit show at Mike ‘n’ Molly’s begins at 9 p.m. with at suggested $3 donation.
