Chicago-based four-piece On Again Off Again, still hold roots in Champaign, with guitarist Brian Houze the only remaining member in the area. With an upcoming show at the Cowboy Monkey and the late-October release of their second EP, the folk rockers are hoping to make a splash across the state of Illinois — and beyond. buzz spoke with the locally-based Houze about the band’s upcoming EP.

buzz: Can you give us an introduction to On Again Off Again in a few sentences?

Brian Houze: Well, we’re a folk rock band originally from Champaign and now in Chicago. I’m the only member who is still in Champaign. Last year, we released our first EP with another one coming out later this month.

buzz: Who would you say are your influences?

BH: We have what we like to call our Big Three, who are Wilco, Radiohead, and Grizzly Bear. They are just three bands who each one of us really likes. [They are] a nice middle ground for

    listening to, I guess.

buzz: Does their influence show a lot in your upcoming EP?

BH: Hopefully, yeah. The songs were written awhile ago, and we just recently got recordings we were happy with. It was mixed by our singer and guitarist Mike Winegardner at home. It is very DIY.

buzz: What do you play in the band?

BH: I’m a guitarist, and the band also includes Ryan Davisson on bass and Dan Gray

    on drums.

buzz: When is the next time you will be playing in CU?

BH: We have a show at Cowboy Monkey on the tenth [of October] with Santa and Jonathon Childers. Color Radio, a band from Chicago, is also going to be there.

buzz: What does the future have in store for On Again Off Again?

BH: Hopefully [the future includes] more shows, especially in Chicago. Right now we are really excited for our show on the tenth. We love coming back here and playing in front of our friends.
