In the summer months, avocados become particularly appealing. They can be used in fresh summer salads, as a burger topping and as spreads for sandwiches. Cookouts are also the best time to bust out a killer guacamole recipe. But nothing ruins the avocado experience as much as getting one home and discovering that it is not yet ripe or, worse, rotten. If you’re planning on using the avocado right away, follow these steps to choose the best one.
1. Scan the avocados and look for ones with a dark black color without any bruises or discoloration. Green spots might indicate they are not yet ripe.
2. Narrow down the avocados by feel, and pick one with a bit of give. Avoid avocados that are extremely firm or too mushy.
3. The last step is to wiggle the stem of the avocado. Find a balance where the stem is neither rigidly in place nor easily removed/pushed into the avocado.
