Now that autumn is in full effect and everyone seems to be embracing the change by digging scarves, boots and glittens out of their closets, I decided to provide a recipe that uses spices normally associated with fall to add some seasonal delight to your coffee. “Café azteca” is a recipe for a flavored coffee drink “inspired” by the Aztecs, who were the first people known to use chocolate extensively as a culinary staple. This beverage doesn’t truly have that much to do with the Aztecs, though I’m sure they would love to take credit for it due to its rich, balanced and slightly spicy flavor — perfect for any fall day. It’s also easy to make, and you should have very few ingredients to purchase, especially if you do any baking.

    Café Azteca

    » 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup

» 4 fl oz. whipping cream

    » ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

    » 2 tablespoons brown sugar

    » pinch of nutmeg

» 16 fl oz. strong black coffee

    » whipped cream (to garnish)

    Makes twp eight-ounce servings

    Directions:

Brew coffee. Whip chocolate syrup, cream, cinnamon, brown sugar and nutmeg together in a small bowl. Pour hot, freshly brewed coffee into the mixture, then stir well, making sure the whipping cream doesn’t try to clump back together. Divide the mixture between two large mugs. Top each mug with whipped cream. It might also be nice to use some more ground cinnamon or nutmeg along with chocolate syrup to add a special tough to the garnish

    of whipped cream.

I may have to try that (sans nutmeg... I've never cared for it) when I'm feeling less lazy. Sounds tasty.
