Before you stuff your face with beer and hotdogs on the Fourth, consider burning all those calories off by participating in the Champaign County Freedom Celebration’s 5K Race/Walk.

The 5K was added to the CCFC in 1994 by committee members who felt another event was needed to reinforce the “all day” celebration. Fourteen years later, the 5K looks to continue providing an excellent kick start to CCFC events.

A youth run for ages 14 and under was added in 1999 for those not quite ready to tackle the 3.1 mile run.

“A lot of races now don’t see a lot of kids,” said Mike Lindeman, CCFC committee member and race director. “Since it is the summer and school is out, the age spread is huge, and it really adds to the quality of the event.”

The gates for the 5K will open at 9:30 and the race begins at Fourth Street, near Assembly Hall.
